Renting an apartment in Medellin
Where to stay on a trip to Medellin
During our trip in 2018, we wanted to try out renting an apartment in the city center, as a change from traditional hotels and hostals. It’s true that we’re not necessarily used to this kind of service in Colombia, where it wasn’t very common until a few years ago.
The advantage (at least for those who are looking for it) of staying in an apartment is that you can be autonomous, make your own meals if you feel like it, have no timetable for breakfast and, above all.enjoy a degree of privacy and tranquillity that is perhaps harder to find in a hotel, let alone a hostal.
You can stay in different parts of Medellin. Of course, it’s possible to rent an apartment right in the heart of the Poblado district, particularly in the friendly Manila area, but you can also stay in the fashionable Laureles district.
Areas to stay in Medellin
- Poblado
- Manila (Poblado)
- Laureles
- San Pablo
You’ll find apartments in more or less touristy areas, with a more or less Colombian atmosphere, depending on your tastes!
In our case, we stayed just a stone’s throw from Parque El Poblado. All in all, our apartment was very well located, just a 10-15 minute walk from the Poblado metro station and right next to a Carulla (small supermarket), which was very convenient for shopping and eating at the apartment.

Vacation rentals in Medellin
For couples, families and groups of friends
There are apartments in Medellin to suit everyone and every number of people: from studios to apartments with 3 or 4 bedrooms. And that’s not a bad thing when you’re looking for a little cocoon for a few nights as a couple or, on the contrary, if you want to find accommodation for a large family or a group of friends.
While prices vary according to area and surface area, it can be cheaper to rent an apartment than to stay in a hotel. And for groups (families or friends), it’s much nicer to all be in the same Medellin apartment, with their own room!
You’ll find that Colombian decoration sometimes leaves something to be desired. But today’s apartments have been carefully renovated, adding a welcome touch of decoration.
How the apartments are equipped
Medellin apartments on Airbnb are furnished with bedding and the basic amenities you’d expect in an apartment: kitchen, WiFi, TV, hot water…
Some apartments will have a few details more or less, washing machine, hair dryer, Netflix is sometimes included in some units, or the equipped kitchen will also have an oven in others…
What was our apartment like?
As the apartment we originally wanted was not available on our dates, we opted for a slightly larger two-bedroom apartment. The larger one was very spacious, overlooking the street, with a large closet for storing your belongings and a large flat-screen TV. The other bedroom, overlooking the small courtyard, was smaller and quieter. Both rooms featured a large, comfortable double bed. The decor was simple and tasteful, and didn’t overload the atmosphere as can sometimes be the case in rental apartments.
Our apartment had everything you’d expect from an apartment and a bit more:
- TV
- Living/dining room
- Fully equipped kitchen
- Shower room
- Wifi connection
- Non-smoking room
- Washing machine
- Small courtyard with drying rack
What are the rental rates?
Renting an apartment in Medellin
Generally speaking, the rates for renting an apartment in Medellin are quite reasonable and offer excellent value for money!
You’ll find homestay rooms for less than $10 USD a night, and entire apartments for less than $30 USD a night.
For example, the price of our two-bedroom apartment was around $45 USD per night. This makes it good value for money, given the surface area, location and little extras such as a washing machine, oven in the kitchen, and so on.
For a group of friends or a family, this becomes a great plan because for this price with two bedrooms and even a sofa bed, you can accommodate up to 6 people!
