Where to stay in Colombia
To put it simply, these are recommended hotels: hotels we’ve stayed in, hotels you’ve tested, hotels our friends have recommended to us, or hotels that everyone else is raving about on the web.
There’s something for everyone, from the really cheap to prices approaching European standards, and for every taste, from the most basic to the most glamorous hotel.
Of course, depending on the region, the city and the more or less remote location, there are more or less hotels on offer, but generally speaking, you’ll have plenty of choice when it comes to finding a hotel in Colombia.
Types of accommodation in Colombia
The best hotels in Colombia
Posadas and Fincas
Homestay accommodation in the sense that you often stay in the house where the owners also live. Posadas and Fincas are grouped together here, but they can be differentiated by the fact that a Finca is essentially a country house, or even a farm with agricultural activities (coffee, cocoa, etc.). It often offers authentic experiences at the heart of Colombian culture.
Hostals
They often feature communal living areas, such as a lounge, patio or garden, as well as a shared kitchen for cooking. Most hostels offer dormitories with bunk beds, or double rooms for couples looking for a little privacy. The hostal is often the cheapest option for accommodation, but some hostels now offer services worthy of good hotels, with pretty double rooms that can be quite expensive.
Hotels
You’ll find the classic range of services you’d expect to find anywhere in the world. Small, family-run hotels can be very pleasant places where you can really get to know the owners and meet new people. Hotels in small towns or in the countryside often have a very “Colombian” atmosphere and decoration (tiled floors, white walls, basic decor).
Ecohabs and EcoLodges
These are hotels located in the middle of nature, often in magical places, which are supposed to respect and blend in with the surrounding landscape. They can be quite expensive, especially when they’re in remote, hard-to-reach locations. Eco lodges usually offer a special connection with nature, where you feel at home.
Apartments
Apartment rental is slowly developing in Colombia. The advantage of renting an apartment is that you can enjoy a certain degree of independence, perhaps more privacy than in a hotel, and the possibility of being self-sufficient, cooking your own meals and so on. There is starting to be a substantial supply of accommodation in Colombia, both in the big cities and in the countryside.
Do I need to book in advance?
The best hotels in Colombia
Everyone has their own way of preparing for a trip: some like to have everything booked in advance for peace of mind, while others prefer to take care of accommodation on the spot, as the itinerary unfolds.
As we explain in our practical guide to preparing your trip, in Colombia it’s perfectly possible to book your accommodation a few days in advance once you’re in the country, with one small caveat: during the high season in the most popular tourist destinations, hotels/hostels are often fully booked! So try to plan ahead in such cases.
Peak season
From December 1st to January 31th
From June 1st to July 31th
During Holy week (10 days)
During Colombian holiday weekends (Friday to Tuesday)
Our selection of accommodation in Colombia
The best hotels in Colombia
The easiest way to book a hotel or hostal in Colombia is to use an online comparator. For the moment, here are the sites with the largest offers in Colombia:
- Booking.com : offers the largest range of accommodation in Colombia.
- Hostelworld.com : for hostals not found on Booking.
- Airbnb : for appartments
We know that these platforms aren’t ideal for hoteliers in general, but we also know that in Colombia it’s the best way for them to be truly visible on the Internet and to have access to a reservation platform. Hoteliers can’t always afford a website with an online payment solution.
Our recommended addresses
In the meantime, we’ve carefully selected accommodation in Colombia that should satisfy most of you! Most of them have been tried and tested by us, by readers of the blog or by friends and family in Colombia. So you can go there with your eyes closed. As for the rest, these are mostly addresses with serious references, offering good service and garnering a high percentage of positive reviews!
